Sixteen Candles is a 1984 American coming-of-age teen comedy film starring Molly Ringwald, Michael Schoeffling, and Anthony Michael Hall. Written and directed by John Hughes in his directorial debut, it was the first in a string of films Hughes would direct, centering on teenage life. The film follows newly 16-year-old Samantha Baker (Ringwald), who deals with a seemingly unrequited crush on high school senior Jake Ryan (Schoeffling) while also being pursued by freshman Ted “The Geek” Farmer (Hall).

Tisha B’Av Film Screening Brings Story of Survival, Empathy, and Hope to Steamboat Springs Steamboat Springs, CO – In a special observance of Tisha B’Av, the Jewish day of mourning, Har Mishpacha: The Jewish Congregation of Steamboat Springs invites the broader community to a screening of the powerful new documentary Holding Liat, followed by a community discussion. The screening will take place on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at 6:30 PM at Wildhorse Cinemas. Tickets are $18 in advance or $24 at the door, with limited seating available. Tickets can be purchased online here: https://shalomcloud.online/purchase?enc_name=SGFyX01pc2hwYWNoYQ== Holding Liat tells the story of Liat Atzili, an Israeli woman taken captive during the October 7th attacks and held in Gaza. The film weaves together Liat’s firsthand account with her family's journey to advocate for her release amidst the trauma of war and social unrest. What sets her story apart is the radical empathy she maintains for the suffering of others... including her captors. “This story changed me,” said Rabbi Kolby Morris-Dahary of Har Mishpacha, who met Liat last summer while studying at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. “What struck me most was her ability to hold compassion even in the face of unimaginable pain. Her story reminds us that […]

Melanie Daniels is the modern rich socialite, part of the jet-set who always gets what she wants. When lawyer Mitch Brenner sees her in a pet shop, he plays something of a practical joke on her, and she decides to return the favor. She drives about an hour north of San Francisco to Bodega Bay, where Mitch spends the weekends with his mother Lydia and younger sister Cathy. Soon after her arrival, however, the birds in the area begin to act strangely. A seagull attacks Melanie as she is crossing the bay in a small boat, and then, Lydia finds her neighbor dead, obviously the victim of a bird attack. Soon, birds in the hundreds and thousands are attacking anyone they find out of doors. There is no explanation as to why this might be happening, and as the birds continue their vicious attacks, survival becomes the priority.—garykmcd
